Everything you need to know about InkCapture
InkCapture is a document scanner and fax app for iPhone. Scan physical documents with automatic edge detection, convert them to searchable PDFs with OCR, organize with folders and tags, and send faxes — all from your phone. Built with privacy first: all scanning and processing happens on your device.
InkCapture requires iOS 17.0 or later. It runs on iPhone and iPad. The app uses Apple's SwiftData framework and modern Vision APIs, which require iOS 17 as a minimum.
No. InkCapture has no accounts, no logins, and no sign-up. You install it and start scanning immediately. Subscriptions are managed entirely through your Apple ID via the App Store.
Camera access is required for document scanning. Photo Library access is optional if you want to import existing photos. Face ID is optional for app lock. Contacts access is only requested if you save a scanned business card as a contact.
Tap the scan button and your camera activates with automatic edge detection powered by Apple VisionKit. Capture one or multiple pages — the app detects document boundaries and corrects perspective automatically. Review your pages, then save as a document or PDF.
Yes. During a scan session you can capture as many pages as you need. They're combined into a single multi-page document. After scanning, you can reorder pages by dragging, rotate them, or swipe to delete individual pages.
OCR (Optical Character Recognition) extracts text from your scanned images, making your PDFs searchable. InkCapture uses Apple's Vision framework to perform OCR entirely on your device — no data is sent to any server. It supports 18+ languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and more.
After scanning you can crop with adjustable corner handles, apply color filters (original, grayscale, black & white), adjust brightness and contrast, rotate pages, reorder by drag-and-drop, and annotate with pen, highlighter, and eraser tools. You can also add signatures using your finger or Apple Pencil.
Yes, Pro users can set a password on exported PDFs. The recipient will need the password to open the file.
You can export as PDF or images via the share sheet — send through email, Messages, AirDrop, or save to Files and iCloud Drive. You can also print directly via AirPrint.
Create folders with hierarchical organization (folders inside folders), add color-coded tags to documents, and use the search function to find documents by name or OCR content. You can also switch between grid and list views and sort by date, name, or size.
Yes — with OCR enabled (Pro feature), all extracted text is indexed and fully searchable. Type a word or phrase and InkCapture finds every document containing that text.
Yes. Scan a business card and InkCapture uses OCR and intelligent parsing to extract contact information — name, phone, email, company, and address. You can save the extracted info directly to your Contacts.
Select any document or PDF, enter the recipient's fax number, and hit send. InkCapture digitizes the document on your device, encrypts it, and transmits it through our secure API relay to standard PSTN fax lines. You get real-time delivery status updates and push notifications when your fax is delivered.
Pro subscribers can send faxes to US and Canadian numbers (5 pages/month included). Pro + Fax subscribers get 100 domestic pages plus 20 international pages per month.
InkCapture includes three built-in cover page templates: Standard, Professional, and Minimal. You can customize the sender info, recipient details, and subject line.
Yes. Every fax has real-time status tracking — queued, sending, delivered, or failed. You'll receive a push notification when delivery completes. A full fax history log is maintained in the app.
We offer a Fax Day Pass — a one-time $2.99 purchase for 10 pages with no subscription required. Your pages never expire, so use them whenever you need. Perfect for occasional faxing without a monthly commitment.
Yes. The free tier includes document scanning with automatic edge detection, multi-page capture, PDF export, and sharing. Free exports include a small watermark. Upgrading to Pro removes limits and the watermark.
Pro is $3.99/month or $29.99/year (save 37%). It unlocks watermark-free PDF exports, full OCR text extraction, searchable PDFs, all filters and editing tools, manual crop and adjust, folders and tags, plus 5 fax pages per month included.
Pro includes 5 fax pages per month. For heavier faxing, Pro + Fax is $7.99/month or $59.99/year (save 37%) and includes 100 domestic pages and 20 international pages per month, plus delivery tracking and priority support. For one-off needs, the Fax Day Pass is a one-time $2.99 purchase for 10 pages — no subscription required. All subscriptions are managed through the App Store.
Most fax apps charge $15–29/month (eFax, MyFax). Scanner apps like CamScanner charge $5–10/month just for OCR. InkCapture Pro starts at $3.99/month with faxing included, and the Pro + Fax tier at $7.99/month gives you 100+ pages — a fraction of the competition. Or skip the subscription entirely with a $2.99 Day Pass for 10 pages.
Yes. Both Pro and Pro + Fax subscriptions can be cancelled anytime through the App Store. There are no cancellation fees, no trial traps, and no dark patterns. The Fax Day Pass is a one-time purchase — your 10 pages never expire.
No. All scanning, OCR, image processing, and document storage happens entirely on your device using Apple's native frameworks. We never see, access, or store your scanned documents. The only exception is faxing — when you send a fax, the document is encrypted and transmitted to our fax gateway, then immediately discarded after delivery.
We use TelemetryDeck, a privacy-first analytics service, to collect anonymous usage statistics — like which features are used most. No personal data, IP addresses, or device fingerprints are collected. No document content ever leaves your device for analytics purposes.
Yes. Enable App Lock in settings to require Face ID or your device passcode to open InkCapture. Your documents are also protected by iOS's built-in sandboxed storage and device encryption.
Document content is encrypted in transit (TLS) and is not stored on our servers after delivery. InkCapture is not currently HIPAA compliant — please do not use it to transmit protected health information.
Make sure you have good lighting — if you're in a dim environment, tap the flashlight icon in the upper right of the scanner to turn on your phone's flash. Hold your phone steady and keep the document flat on a surface. The automatic edge detection works best with high-contrast documents. After scanning, you can manually adjust the crop corners and apply filters to improve clarity.
OCR works best with clearly printed text and good scan quality. Try scanning in better lighting, ensuring the document is flat and in focus. Handwritten text may not be recognized as accurately as printed text. Make sure you've selected the correct language if the document isn't in English.
Double-check the recipient's fax number — it must be a valid US or Canadian fax number. Ensure you have an active internet connection. The recipient's fax machine must be powered on and not busy. If the issue persists, check your fax history for the error status and contact us at paulmattheww@gmail.com.
Your purchases are tied to your Apple ID. On your new device, go to Settings within the app and tap "Restore Purchases." Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used for the original purchase.
